Principal's Update 3/30/2020

Dear Bowmen Families,

It’s hard to believe that it’s been two weeks...I’m not sure if I should be saying “only two weeks” because time has really started to blur together, but here we are nonetheless.  Like many of you, I am learning to navigate working from home as well as parenting young children, being a wife, caring for family and friends and simply living in the midst of a pandemic.  It is definitely not something that I was prepared for, but it is now something that I’m forced to figure out.

And I’m doing okay.

It’s really hard though.

It's hard because I'm a control freak and I like being confident in the next step. Especially in this role. I pride myself on knowing the path and operating three steps ahead of everyone else. But that is not my reality right now. The reality of all of this is that despite the countless hours of work that I've put in over the last two weeks, the meetings I've held, the conversations I've had, I still don't know what's going to happen past probably next Wednesday.

I don't have the answers and I'm so very sorry. I'm sorry that I can’t share a complete plan of how we’re going to be providing credit and ensuring graduation for our seniors. I'm sorry that I won't be able to answer all of the questions that I know you all have. And I'm sorry that I can't make this easier for all of us to navigate.

So as we enter into this week, my ask of you is that you are gracious.  Please be gracious with our teachers and staff as we work to learn an entirely new way of doing our jobs.  Please be gracious with your children as they navigate online learning. Be gracious with yourselves as you balance your life responsibilities with this new education.  We're all doing the very best we can.

I am planning to send out communication twice per week, at a minimum.  Below are some nuts and bolts to some questions that I can answer. As new information becomes available, I will share it in a video as well as through email.  Please let me know if there are other ways to communicate that would be helpful.

In the coming weeks, I am confident that we will be awesome.   The Bowmen Family is strong and we will come out of this even stronger.

Thank you for jumping into this new reality with us.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions or need anything.  Be well! Thanks!

Supplemental Learning Opportunities

Beginning on April 1, 2020, teachers will post supplemental learning opportunities for our courses.  As the District stated in the communication that went out last week, supplemental learning is not credit bearing nor is it new learning.  This is a hard reality for me, as I am fully aware of the implications of this at the high school level. Please know and trust that we are doing everything in our power to get to a point where we can offer credit in some capacity and provide the opportunities our students need to continue moving forward in their high school journeys- we are just not there yet.  Please encourage your student(s) to connect with their teachers over the coming weeks on a regular basis.

AP Next Steps

The College Board has released information for students currently taking AP (Advanced Placement) courses and has eliminated traditional face-to-face administrations of the AP exam. Instead, students will take a 45-minute online free-response exam at home. There will be two different testing dates to offer flexibility for students. The College Board has developed free online learning resources and beginning March 25th, students can attend free, live AP review courses virtually. Sherwood AP students and families can check their teachers’ Canvas page and/or email them directly for continued support

Dual Credit Update

At this point, we are working with our college partners, our legal counsel and the state department of education to determine whether or not we will be able to move forward with offering Dual Credit this trimester.  I will have an answer about this by the end of the week and will communicate that to you as quickly as possible.

Graduation/Senior Activities/Josten’s Orders/Etc.

Until we know more about how long schools will be closed and/or what guidelines will be in place upon our return, we can not make any decisions about any of these activities.  We have many thoughts on the table and are in constant conversation about how we can help make the end of this year meaningful and memorable (for the positive aspects happening) for our seniors.  This is truly one of the most heart-breaking aspects of this entire ordeal.

One thing to know is that all Josten’s orders are being held by Josten’s.  They are working to develop a plan for distribution that will be communicated as quickly as possible.

Spring Athletics and Activities

Again, as a result of the school closures, all athletics and activities are suspended until that time.  We routinely monitor the OSAA communications and will let you know as soon as we hear any information. I know that student-athletes are still getting together to practice and whatnot, but I do need to remind everyone that the SSD facilities are closed.  I also want to remind you to encourage your students to adhere to the social distancing guidelines if they are choosing to get together.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me for whatever reason.
