NHS Process for New Member Selection:

    • All members must be a junior or senior.

    • 3.5 unweighted cumulative GPA based on last trimester, June 2018.

    • Must be enrolled in at least 4 academic courses each trimester.

    • Behavior in good standing.

    • $20 Membership fee.

    • 20 hours of independent community service completed and documented by the selection deadline of Friday, September 28.  Service hours must have been completed from January 2018 to September 29, 2018.  Please fill out the Community Service Form.

    • Request 3 Teacher Recommendations--please see form.
    • Completion of the Selection Form and Essay turned in by 3:30 P.M., Friday, September 28, 2018.  All Selection Forms will be evaluated by a five member faculty committee and official notification of acceptance will be by mid-October.

Please access the attached documents to apply to NHS.  The requirements are listed on the application.  Once accepted students are expected to maintain good character, leadership and scholarship.  Additionally, students will need to do the following to maintain membership:

Members must complete the following requirements to maintain membership:

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5

  • Be enrolled in 4 academic classes (earns a letter grade) each trimester

  • Continue to exemplify and promote positive behavior and leadership

  • Contribute to the community by completing 35 hours (10 to SHS) of individual community service including one hour (per trimester) of SHS sanctioned tutoring.

  • Pay a $20 membership fee towards NHS scholarships, events and materials.

  • Help with Induction Ceremony (seniors), Winter Mixer (everyone) and Graduation (juniors).


Members are expected to be on time to all meetings. The only excused absences are for members enrolled in a zero period academic class and those with a pre-arranged absences through the school.

  • Prior to the excused absence, members are required to provide a copy of the completed SHS pre-arranged absence form to a NHS advisor.

  • Any members with an excused absence are required to attend a make-up meeting the following Tuesday of that month.

  • An unexcused absence will result in an infraction.

  • Two late arrivals lead to an infraction.


Failure to fulfill any of the above requirements will incur an infraction. Members will be put on probation with the second infraction. Three infractions will result in immediate loss of membership.

  • Students will receive a notice for each infraction.

  • Parents will be contacted by a NHS advisor upon the second infraction.
