LIFETIME SPORTS – COURSE EXPECTATIONS AND GRADING POLICY 2016-17

Philosophy – Physical education is a full partner in a student’s overall education.  A quality program will help students to accept responsibility for their classmate’s safety, assume leadership in team decision, accept moral responsibility for actions, and develop a sense of fair play.  Physical fitness for life will be stressed in this course.  It is in your best interest to put forth participation that will be a key to your success in the PE program at Sherwood High School.

Expectations

  1. Students are expected to dress down every day in appropriate attire.

  2. Students are expected to put forth their very best effort.

  3. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a safe manner during class and in the locker rooms.

  4. Students are expected to show respect for themselves, their peers, and the instructor at all times.

Policies

Dressing down – bring clothing that will be used exclusively for PE.  (T-shirt, shorts, socks, tennis shoes) No hats, nylons, cutoff jeans, ragged clothing, or shirts with inappropriate slogans.  Clothes need to be taken home on a regular basis for washing.

Locks and lockers – each student will be issued a PE locker.   Students are responsible for making sure they have locked up all personal items in their lockers before leaving.  Sherwood High School cannot be responsible for any stolen items.

Showers – facilities and towels are provided and should be utilized by students following class.  Make sure towels go into appropriate bin when dirty.

Safety – students are expected to follow all directions given by the instructor and conduct themselves in a safe manner at all times.  All injuries should be reported to the instructor immediately.  Report any physical conditions that may limit your activities to the instructor.  (Epilepsy, allergies, asthma, mono, or previous restricting type of injuries or illness)

Excuses from PE

If you are well enough to attend school, you will be expected to dress down and participate to the best of your ability.  If injured, you will need a doctor’s note to excuse you from activities and also to resume activities.  Every effort will be made to provide alternative activities for the student to participate in that do not conflict with the doctor’s specified restrictions.

IF YOU CANNOT OR CHOOSE NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN PE CLASS, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PRACTICE OR PLAY IN ANY OSAA OR SCHOOL SPONSORED SPORTING EVENT THAT DAY!!

Tardy Policy – you must be in your assigned position 5 minutes after the tardy bell rings.  Failure to do so will result in an unexcused tardy.

Long term injuries or illness – if you are injured or suffer a prolonged illness and will miss PE class for more than 3 weeks, you will be required to drop the class.  This only will apply if the injury or illness occurs before the last day to drop a class each trimester.

Make Up Policy – if you miss a day of class and it is excused, you will need to make up the time missed and bring back documentation signed by a parent or guardian.  School related absences are exempt from this policy.  (Field trips, sports, band trips, etc…)

For each excused absence, one half hour of aerobic activity or one hour of anaerobic activity will be required.  This is to be done outside of your normal school day.  Therefore, after school sports do not qualify for make-up.

Unexcused absences cannot be made up and will receive a zero for the day.

STUDENTS WILL ONLY BE ALLOWED TO MAKE UP 10 DAYS OF EXCUSED ABSENCES.  ONCE YOU REACH 10 DAYS, A MEETING WITH YOUR PARENTS OR GUARDIANS WILL BE REQUIRED.  SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES AND LONG TERM ILLNESS OR INJURIES WILL NEED TO BE APPROVED BY ADMINISTRATION.

Miscellaneous – when entering the gym, please walk around the main court to get to the locker rooms.  You must remain in the gym until the bell rings.

Grading Policy – students will be given the opportunity to earn 5 points each day.  As long as you dress down in appropriate clothing, are on time, and perform to the best of your ability, you will be given all 5 points.  Points will be deducted for excused tardies (-1), unexcused tardies (-2), dress cuts (-5), and for not fully participating or following classroom rules or game rules.  (-1 to -5)  Excused absences will not receive any points until make up work is completed and turned in.  Points will be added up at the end of the week and posted in Synergy.  Grades at the end of the trimester will be as follows.  90% A, 80% B, 70% C, 60% D, and below 60% F.
